Why Aromatherapy Is More Than Just a Pleasant Smell

When people hear the word "aromatherapy," they often picture scented candles, pampering spa days, or basic relaxation. But look beneath the surface, and you’ll find that pure essential oils are far more than a luxury—they are a direct, biological intervention for the human brain and nervous system.

If you love iconic apothecary brands like Aesop or Neal’s Yard, you already appreciate how a luxury botanical wash can elevate your daily shower ritual. Having recently spoken at a local yoga workshop on the power of smell, I wanted to share the fascinating science behind how scent impacts our physiology, memory, and emotional state—and how this shapes everything we formulate at Innerlather.

The Direct Line to the Brain: The Olfactory System

Every other sense we experience—sight, touch, hearing, and taste—must first pass through a sensory relay station in the brain called the thalamus before being processed. Scent is the single exception.

When you inhale a pure essential oil, volatile aromatic molecules travel up the nasal cavity and interact directly with the olfactory bulb. From there, neural signals travel straight to the brain’s limbic system—specifically the amygdala (our emotional processing centre) and the hippocampus (the vault for memory recall).

Because scent bypasses the analytical, conscious brain, its effect is virtually instantaneous. Inhaling a specific botanical lipid can influence your heart rate, lower cortisol levels, and shift your emotional state before you have even consciously processed what you are smelling.

Scent and Memory: The Proustian Effect

Have you ever caught a whiff of a specific flower, resin, or meal and been instantly transported back to your childhood home or a forgotten summer?

This is known as the Proustian effect. Because the olfactory bulb is physically wired into the hippocampus, scent triggers some of our most vivid, emotionally charged memories. This biological link makes aromatherapy a potent tool for mindfulness, grounding, and stress management. By pairing targeted essential oil blends with intentional daily practices—like breathwork, yoga, or an evening shower—you actively anchor feelings of safety, calm, and presence.

From Clinical Practice to Creative Expression

In my work as an aromatherapist and skin therapist at Innerlather, formulating a product is never just about aesthetics or creating a nice fragrance. Unlike mass-produced shower gels that rely on synthetic parfum and harsh SLS sulfates, every natural body wash and organic body balm I create is formulated around plant chemistry. We focus on how botanicals interact with both your skin barrier and your nervous system to support dry, sensitive, or stressed skin.

Understanding this deep connection between scent, emotion, and memory has always fascinated me. Recently, I’ve been looking forward to exploring incredible new ways to use aromatherapy beyond traditional skincare—transitioning these principles into immersive, commercial environments.

I have an exciting project launching this December that brings scent, art, and emotion together in a whole new way. Watch this space—more details are coming soon!
